The Only Bad Press Is No Press (Heard That Phrase Before?)

By Chuck Harman, International Fraternity of Wrestlers

Many people have gotten angry the Division I NCAA Wrestling Championship results received little to no media coverage over the years. The results are not completely ignored by the media. USA Today sends a reporter and ESPN provides coverage. However, “SportsCenter” has yet to cover the full Championship results and USA Today’s coverage does not include the printed results.

This year Los Angeles hosted the 2015 World Cup. Iran and the United States battled for first place, and USA Wrestling worked out a broadcast deal with NBC Universal. Again, NO “SportsCenter” coverage. NO results printed in USA Today. Not even a mention on “Mike & Mike,” the ESPN sports radio and TV show.

Here’s what should make anyone who cares about wrestling concerned; recently a picture of Jake Varner and Jordan Burroughs holding their 2012 Olympic Gold medals was posted on Facebook. Every day, thousands of wrestlers, fans, and the extended wrestling community visit Facebook. And of the 100 people guessing who they were, only three correctly named Varner and Burroughs.

Not being able to identify two of wrestling’s most recent Olympic champions is the current state of wrestling. Just the facts. No need to be angry.

Just ask yourself one question. Do you want that to change? If you answered YES, then join the International Fraternity of Wrestlers, and it will change! You will be funding the IFW’s effort to be the marketing company for wrestling.
