As wrestlers, we always believed our sport was untouchable. Being a low-cost, niche sport that anyone of any size could participate in gave us a false sense of security that our programs were untouchable and would be around forever. In spite of 669 NCAA programs being dropped since 1972 and dwindling numbers in high school wrestling rooms across the nation, we still believed our great sport would not be seriously challenged. Until February 2013…
The Wake-up Call
Wrestling goes back to the ancient Olympics in Greece and has been on the program of every modern Game (except 1900). In early 2013, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted to drop wrestling as a core Olympic event starting with the 2020 Games, catching the wrestling community – and the larger sporting world – off guard. Supporters of wrestling were quick to respond. Following considerable vocal consumer outrage and a six-month campaign by U.S. and international wrestling governing organizations to update and reshape the sport, wrestling was reinstated as a provisional sport for the 2020 games.
This wake-up call merely scratched the surface of yesterday’s competitive wrestling population. With over 11 million previously competitive wrestlers between the ages of 25 and 65, the IFW is poised to unite and mobilize those that know what it’s like to grind it out on the mat.
IFW Will Make a Difference
The International Fraternity of Wrestlers is a membership-based fraternal organization created by and for active and previously competitive wrestlers, coaches and officials. IFW is dedicated to connecting male and female athletes who wrestled, coached and / or officiated at any level during their lifetime. The collective strength of the fraternity will create greater purchasing power and larger share of voice when promoting and advocating on behalf of the great sport of wrestling.
Membership fees and purchases will support three key efforts:
- Increase wrestling’s relevancy by reconnecting millions of yesterday’s wrestlers, IFW will show the sports world that wrestling is a sport of relevance.
- Promote wrestling through marketing and media initiatives filling a critical gap in wrestling’s promotion.
- Give back to wrestling financially, immediately and long-term.
Through these efforts, we can ensure that future generations have the same opportunity to grow and learn from wrestling as we have. Your membership is important! As only through supporting wrestling with your membership will this be possible.
Once a Wrestler, Always a Wrestler
Membership in the IFW reinvigorates the passion and loyalty that wrestlers have for their sport, regardless if their competition days are behind them. It provides a hub for social interaction, a stream of competition news and updates, access to events and activities as well as immediate and long-term financial benefits for members and the wrestling community.
Active participation will allow members a broad platform to help wrestling thrive, stay relevant and never again be compromised on any level.
