8 Year Old Nathan Fish Pens Letter to Sports Illustrated on the Importance of Covering Wrestling
Roxanne Fish, the mother of 8 year old wrestler Nathan, shared the letter below that he penned to Sports Illustrated regarding the importance of covering wrestling.
My son wrote this letter to Sports Illustrated about the importance of wrestling. He was disappointed when they didn’t dedicate an entire issue to wrestling and told me not to buy any more of their magazines until they do so. He wanted me to send copies of his letter to other wrestling supporters that may be able to help him “get things done around here!” Below is a typed version of his handwritten letter. -Roxanne Fish
Dear Sports Illustrated Magazine and other guys,
My name is Nathan Fish. I am an 8 year old wrestler from Lusk, Wyoming. I want to know why you don’t have one full magazine only about wrestling.
Logan Stieber is a 4 time NCAA champion from Ohio. He should be on your front page. Isaiah Martinez is a freshman from Illinois with an undefeated season and is an NCAA champion. He is only a freshman. He should be on the front page. Jordan Burroughs is a World Champion in freestyle wrestling. He should be on the front page of your magazine.
I watched these matches on TV. I look up to these guys. They are good role models. They spent their whole lives getting ready for that day. They probably had to give up things like video games, cake and ice cream because they were training.
I will be wrestling in the NCAA championships one day. And I hope that when I win my 4th NCAA championship that I will be on the cover for your magazine. Wrestling needs have its own Sports Illustrated magazine just like you have for the Final Four basketball, the Super Bowl and your golf one which I don’t think is even a sport. I told my mom not to buy any more magazines until you have one all about wrestling.
Here are my top 10 reasons why I think you should have a magazine only about wrestling:
1. It makes you tough.
2. It keeps you in shape.
3. You can’t blame anyone if you lose.
4. If you win, it’s because you worked hard in the practice room.
5. You learn how to win with honor and lose with honor.
No bragging and no bawling.
6. It feels awesome to have your hand raised at the end of a tough triple overtime match.
7. It makes you more flexible, balanced, and quick on your feet and that is good for all sports.
8. It makes your head stronger. You can’t fall apart when you get knocked down. You just get back up.
9. It takes courage to get out on the mat all by yourself.
10. Wrestling teaches respect for yourself and for others.
I am sending a copy of my letter to Dana White, Dan Gable, Chael Sonnen, Flowrestling, and Urijah Faber. This is serious business. What does an 8 year old have to do to get things done around here?!
Sincerely,
Nathan Kain Fish
